Developers of the proposed boutique hotel, restaurant, and spa on Jefferson Avenue are hoping to have their plans approved again for the fifth time by Oxford’s two historic preservation commissions.

Plans for a three-story boutique hotel and parking lot were originally approved in 2010; however, property owner Stefano Capomazza has not yet started building since one of the financial investors backed out of the project.

On Monday, the Courthouse Square Historic Preservation Commission re-approved the Certificate of Appropriateness for Seeker Properties to construct a parking lot on the south side of Jefferson Avenue, across from where the hotel is planned to be constructed, that will have an electronic gate.

The COAs for the parking lot and hotel were re-approved in May 2014, June 2015 and again in July 2016.

The parking lot falls under the Courthouse Square commission since it’s adjoining the Square, while the hotel across the street falls under the residential Historic Preservation Commission’s district since it’s located in the residential area.

Several buildings in and around the Square fall under both commissions, depending on where they are located.

The residential HPC will have to re-approve the COA for the hotel itself.

The La Rousse Salon is currently located on the site of the future hotel parking lot. When and if construction of the hotel begins, the salon will be relocated inside of the hotel and the current building, originally constructed in 1895, will be donated to Habitat for Humanity and moved to another lot to be used in Lafayette County.

The commission approved the COA with a 3 to 1 vote with the condition that the current La Rousse, a Queen Anne cottage, is not moved until construction begins on the new hotel.
