A Lafayette County man has been indicted for the murder of a 31-year-old father of five during an argument in March.

On June 6, a grand jury handed down the indictment on one charge of murder for Christopher Paten who is charged with shooting and killing Kenya Jawaan “KJ” Hill.

According to reports, Paten shot Hill four times in the upper chest and head area after an argument broke out between him and Paten at a residence in the Brittany Estate apartment complex on March 9.

Hill was flown to the Regional One Medical Center in Memphis where he died a week later from his injuries.

Paten eluded arrest for more than two months until he was found in May by the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Jackson.

Paten, who is also known as Chris Caine, was out on bail when the shooting occurred for an arrest in December 2015 on charges of armed robbery and felon in possession of a firearm. He was released on bond in April 2016 and was awaiting trial on those charges.

According to court records, in that case, Paten pulled a gun on a man during a dice game.

2 indicted for vehicle fires

The June grand jury also indicted two Oxford men for allegedly setting a fire in the back of a pickup in January.

According to reports, on Jan. 13, Andrew D. Hobby, 31, and Jerry T. Miller, 19, started a fire in the truck where a four-wheeler was located. The fire destroyed the pickup and the four-wheeler. Another vehicle parked beside the pickup was damaged as well.

A witness came forward and gave the details of how the crime took place.

Hobby and Miller both face two counts of felony malicious mischief. Both men pleaded not guilty at their arraignment on June 26 at the Lafayette County Circuit Court and are awaiting trial.
