Oxford, Mississippi — As part of the annual football rivalry between the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores, the United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County (UWOLC) will once again team up with Lafayette County School District and Oxford School District for the Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge.

With a 7:00 p.m. kickoff time on Friday, September 8, 2017, the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores will compete on the gridiron for Crosstown Classic bragging rights at Lafayette High School, located at 160 Commodore Drive in Oxford, Mississippi. The rivalry is not limited to the field, though, as supporters of both schools can compete between now and Tuesday, September 12, 2017, to see who can raise the most money for the Lafayette-Oxford-University (LOU) community. Each district has a unique text-to-donate code that will enable supporters’ donations to be counted towards their favorite hometown team.

To support the Lafayette Commodores, supporters can text “DORES” to 40403, and then click on the link they will receive prompting them to complete their donation. Commodore fans can also simply give online at www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/dores.

To support the Oxford Chargers, supporters can text “CHARGERS” to 40403, and then click on the link they will receive prompting them to complete their donation. In addition, Charger fans can donate online at www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/chargers.

The pledged donation must be collected by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, in order for the amount to count towards this year’s competition and the supporter’s team of choice. Every dollar makes a difference and the UWOLC is proud to partner with its local school districts to make a significant impact throughout Oxford and Lafayette County.

“Our community is blessed to have two outstanding public school districts as well as proud supporters who want to make a positive impact in the lives of others,” said UWOLC’s Executive Director Kurt Brummett. “The Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge offers a unique opportunity for fans of both schools to join together in a friendly competition that will benefit the entire LOU community.”

Cash and check donations will also be accepted in addition to the text-to-donate and online payment options. A special trophy presentation will be held at the winning school district following the contest deadline.

Last year, the Oxford Chargers won the inaugural Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge by a narrow margin. The rivalry will be fierce again this year as both districts seek to bring home the trophy while helping to improve lives and meet needs of local residents.
