There was some talk about what Miley Cyrus wore Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards, or, more specifically what she didn’t wear. Her outfit was likened to wearing duct tape by many throughout the globe.

But the bigger talk that has stayed in the news throughout the week and is likely not going away is Kanye West saying he has plans to run for president.

He said at the awards, quoted by CNN: “I don’t know what I finna lose after this. It don’t matter, though; It’s not about me. It’s about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth. And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

This is quite different from his behavior in 2009 when he grabbed the microphone from Taylor Swift and caused an Internet sensation.

Time will tell on how serious he is. He could certainly finance his own run for president.

He would certainly add a good deal more media fodder and there would be people in editorial cartoons other than Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton.

How would Kanye handle the national debt? Increase it by buying more cars? How would he negotiate with Iran? Send a Kardashian to go have a chat with them?

There are countless joke opportunities about the national debt and his “Gold Digger” song for sure. And his campaign motto could be having “FourFiveSeconds” to find a solution.

Maybe the Democratic Party is just having fun with the attention, but its leaders might just be OK with the announcement.

The official Twitter account of the Democratic Party tweeted “Last night @ kanyewest declared his candidacy for president in 2020. Welcome to the race, Mr. West. Glad to have you.”

If celebrities are seriously announcing they plan to run for president and go through with it, what does that say about the state of this nation? What does that say about our slate of candidates for the upcoming presidential election? That’s another editorial altogether.

But Kanye West saying he plans to run for president and it even being taken remotely seriously says we are glorifying the wrong things.

Let’s get real and be serious about the direction our country is going.
