Congressman Trent Kelly spoke at a First-to-Know Breakfast at the Oxford Convention Center today to address his constituents and discuss upcoming issues that will impact the people of Mississippi.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be here today,” he said.

Kelly discussed his visit across his 22 counties and the Mississippi Delta and his association with the Agriculture committee and its involvement with foreign trade and commodity exchange subcommittees.

He said he is working hard with other congressmen and senators to build working and professional relationships with other officials to ensure progress in Washington, D.C.

Kelly also spoke about national deals he is concerned about that would be relevant to Mississippians indefinitely such as the Iran Deal and a Transportation Bill.

Kelly said he does not support the Iran negotiation and it is very important it does not pass for the safety of our nation.

“I think it’s a bad deal,” said Kelly. He added that if the United States had to go to war with Iran, he would rather choosea conventional war over a nuclear war and he did not want to see the U.S return to a Cold War status any time soon.

Kelly said he supports a fully funded Transportation Bill that would be in effect for a full six years. He said the Mississippi highways, roads and bridges are what the Mississippi economy depends on, whether it’s a large corporation or a small business in the state.

“We cannot continue to have our highways unmaintained,” he said. He added when bridges and roads are not properly maintained, commerce transportation has to go well out of the way to effectively transport goods, and that is not efficient for anyone involved.

Kelly said he does not like to see the youth of Mississippi have to go elsewhere for jobs.

Kelly ended his breakfast and said he not only represents the larger cities in his district, but also the smaller municipalities and he is dedicated to hearing what everyone has to say while he is in office.

“I want to do what is truly right for the people of Mississippi.”

Kelly will continue his tour of his district and will speak at the University of Mississippi’s Overby Center from 7 to 8:30 p.m. later today.
