Twelve candidates have been invited to attend a debate Oct. 28 in advance of the general election Nov. 3.

The Oxford EAGLE has partnered with Super Talk 93.7/105.5 to bring residents the opportunity to hear the candidates at the Oxford Conference Center at 6 p.m.

If you can’t make it in person, the event will be broadcast on 93.7.

The debate will be in a question-and-answer format with a moderator, and candidates have been asked to stick around after the debate to meet and greet residents.

“The election is on people’s minds right now,” said Publisher Tim Phillips.

“With two strong school systems and the university here, education funding and planning for the future are important. We want to ensure residents have all the information they need to make a sound decision at the polls, whether it is reading about the candidates in the EAGLE or attending the debate.”

Those invited to attend the debate with races up for grabs include:

— Lafayette County Supervisor District 1 with candidates Republican Rickey Babb, Democrat Kevin Frye and Independent Brian Hyneman.

— Lafayette County Supervisor District 3 with candidates Republican David Rikard, Democrat Dale Timothy Gordon and Independent Zack Carey.

— Lafayette County Supervisor District 5 where Democrat incumbent Mike Roberts will face Republican Johnny Mike Fortner.

— House District 12 where Republican incumbent Brad Mayo will face Democratic candidate Jay Hughes.

— Senate District 9 where Republican incumbent Gray Tollison will face Democratic candidate Cristen Hemmins.

Coffee and water will be provided for visitors.

“We are very excited to bring this debate to the residents of Lafayette County,” said Editor Stephanie Rebman. “The supervisor race is coming at a crucial time in the growth spurt of Lafayette County. The House and Senate races are also key for the future of the state, especially with the Initiative 42 decision coming in November.”
