In an attempt to preserve the legacy of the Confederate solider, the Oxford Sons of Confederate Veterans, University Greys Camp No. 1803 will host a public meeting Wednesday to give the public a chance to learn more about the Confederate flag and find out ways they can help keep it flying in Mississippi.

“That (state) flag was designed to memorialize the Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War,” said Jon Rawl, member and past commander of the local chapter. “Any attempt to change that is against our creed and we have to make an effort to stop that.”

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Oxford and Lafayette County Public Library amphitheater.

Arthur Randallson, a flag activist from Southaven, will share the latest on action plans to preserve the Mississippi state flag, which has come under fire in the last several months following a deadly shooting in Charleston, South Carolina in which the alleged shooter posted photos of himself with the Confederate battle flag on social media.

The Oxford Board of Aldermen recently voted 7-0 to remove the state flag from city property, joining several other Mississippi towns that have removed the state flag from public property. The state Legislature is expected to discuss whether or not to change the state flag during its 2016 session, starting in January.

“There are a lot of people in Oxford who are not happy with that decision,” Rawl said. “Personally, I wrote a letter to each aldermen. It may not have been a big thing to do, but at least I can say I did something.”
