The Oxford Middle School seventh-grade football team got a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Locke Elliott and two scoring runs from Spencer Morgan to help the Chargers to a 42-16 win over Lafayette on Tuesday at Bobby Holcomb Field.

Elliott opened the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kywuan Phillips in the first quarter and connected with Xavier Walton from 20 yards out in the third quarter. Morgan had a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and added a 10-yard scamper in the third.

Downing Koestler added an 8-yard touchdown run for the Chargers, who used some early turnovers by the Commodores to take a 22-8 lead at the half. One of them resulted in points directly for the Chargers as Phillips found the end zone a second time with a 37-yard interception return for a score.
Lafayette scored its touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters.

“Coming into the game, we were really concerned about their size. We had heard that they were big and very aggressive and they were, but there is no doubt that early turnovers by them helped us to get out to an early lead and establish our fast tempo on offense,” Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said.
