You probably wouldn’t buy a new car without taking it for a spin, so Oxford University School is now offering a similar test drive.

“Come spend the day with us at our beautiful new campus,” said Bill Arnold, the new head of school. “That way you can sit next to your potential classmates, meet our teachers and experience our classroom atmosphere and exciting specials. It’s the best way to see if we are a good match.”

Sarah Hopkins, assistant head of school, said the private, nonprofit school does things a little differently and it’s a good idea for parents to see that firsthand.

“It’s one thing to tell parents that we do things differently — that we stress plenty of outdoor recess and reduced homework while teaching effectively in a small classroom setting,” she said, “but it’s an entirely different thing if a prospective student can experience our approach for him or herself.”

Hopkins said it’s not too late to join the school year in progress, assuming the student meets OUS’ academic requirements.

“We understand that parents may realize a few weeks into the semester that their current school is not a good fit for their child,” Hopkins said. “We want them to know that they don’t have to wait until the end of the school year but can initiate a switch now.”

OUS currently serves children from age 3 through the seventh grade. With the new school year, five new teachers, three assistants, one coach and an after-school director have joined the school’s staff and faculty.

Hopkins said about two-thirds, or 67 percent, of OUS’ faculty members either earned a master’s degree or are currently working toward one. On average, each teacher brings 13 years of experience to the classroom. The school prides itself on individualized attention, reduced amounts of homework, plenty of specials and ample recess to create a fun learning experience for its students.
