Ballroom dance lessons return to Oxford for fall

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to waltz and love to dance but your significant other has four legs on the dance floor, today is your first of a handful of opportunities to learn.

Ballroom dancing lessons will be at the Oxford Fencers Club at 606 McLarty Road on Mondays in October and November. The Dance Studio of Tupelo is bringing the lessons, which do not require you to bring a dance partner, today and Oct. 26 as well as Nov. 2, 9 and 16. The lineup is beginner waltz at 6 p.m., beginner rumba at 7 p.m. and Bachata at 8 p.m. The cost is $10 for one class, $15 or two or $20 for all three.

Charlise Latour with The Dance Studio said ballroom dancing is about having so much fun you don’t realize you’re actually exercising.

“Ballroom dancing is both fun and a great way to get exercise,”’ she said. “The benefits include having an active social life, getting to meet new people and learning how to move with another person to great music. It is fun for couples and singles alike. People often choose to take classes so they are comfortable dancing at social events such as parties, class reunions, weddings and on cruise ships. It’s often so enjoyable that people forget they are getting a workout at the same time.”

Latour said it is also about making friends with people you wouldn’t necessarily meet since it brings together all ages. Students, faculty, young and old will be found at Oxford’s lessons this fall. Like the cross-culture of participants, there also is a wide variety of music to boogie on down to, whether it is Frank Sinatra or the current Taylor Swift top 40 hit.

The Dance Studio has been offering lessons in Oxford for over ten years. Originally they were offered through the University, but now they are offered independently.

“Our classes are taught by people who are expert dancers and great teachers,” Latour said. “Their goal is to ensure that students have a lot of fun while improving their ability to dance at social events. The Dance Studio partners with the Ole Miss Ballroom Dance Club to host monthly dances, which provide even more opportunities to enjoy dancing.

“We love offering classes in Oxford because of the great dance community. People are supportive of new dancers and ensure that everyone has a great time.”

Latour said even the beginners should not fear, because “if you can walk, you can learn to dance.” The classes are designed with the person who has never danced before in mind, and most people “catch on” to the basics by the first class.

“There really is something here for all interests: the club dancer, the strictly social, the competitive, the beginner, the very advanced, the young, singles, couples and all ages can feel at home in the ballroom dance community,” she said.
