Members of the David Reese chapter of the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution told the Oxford Board of Aldermen Tuesday they would like to donate a flagpole and American flag to the city to be put up at the new Oxford City Pavilion.

The donation will commemorate the chapter’s 115th anniversary, the 120th anniversary for the state organization and the 125th anniversary of the national organization.

The chapter will raise the funds to purchase the pole and the flag that’s estimated to cost about $3,000.

The organization will donate the pole and the flag and the city will install it at the new pavilion on the corner of Bramlett Boulevard and University Avenue, where the former National Guard armory was located.

The specified flagpole is slated to be 30 feet tall, with a gold ball at the top and containing an internal halyard. The installation by the city will conform to U.S. flag protocol requiring flags flying 24 hours to be lit at night. The David Reese chapter will also provide a commemorative bronze plaque to be affixed to the structure in honor of the gift.

The chapter needed approval from the Board of Aldermen to donate the flag and pole and their agreement to put the flag up, before members could move forward with asking the community for donations.

The board approved the request unanimously.

When completed, the chapter will have a dedication ceremony.
