After putting together back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Water Valley is hungry for more.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Blue Devils have the postseason on their mind. The goal of a playoff berth can become more of a reality with a win at Holly Springs Friday night.

Things are trending upward for Water Valley as the Blue Devils are starting to put points on the board and keep opponents off it.

“I think we’re getting better,” Water Valley coach Brad Embry said. “We’re getting things in order, finding what we can and can’t do. The kids are working hard, and we’ve been getting better results.”

The Blue Devils are coming off a 30-18 win over North Panola on Senior Night last week, starting a winning streak they would like to continue. While the execution was not always there, Embry was proud of the effort he’s seen from his team over the past two games.

“We played pretty good,” Embry said. “That’s the way it needs to be. You’re not ever going to be perfect, but your effort can be. It’s a game of 11 people moving in all places and directions and there’s always going to be a little problem with execution at times, but your effort can always be great.”

Water Valley (4-5, 2-1 Region 2-3A) returns to Holly Springs (2-7, 0-3) for the second straight year. Last season, the Blue Devils defeated the Hawks, 61-33, in a lopsided game.
The record may not show it, but Holly Springs has skill players that can still make opposing defenses pay if given the opportunity.

“Holly Springs has got speed, that’s what worries you,” Embry said. “Speed, you don’t have to drive the ball. One play is a touchdown. That’s the main concern I’ve got watching them on film.”

The Hawks lost three skill players due to graduation and have a fairly new look compared to what Water Valley saw a season ago.

Junior quarterback Jarron Delvridge is the signal caller for Holly Springs. He has completed 57 of his 125 pass attempts for 925 yards and 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has also rushed for 179 yards on 73 carries.

The main threat on the ground is Joseph Stone III. The junior has rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns on 61 carries.

With a 2-1 record in the region, Water Valley is tied for second with Independence, whom the Blue Devils already beaten, and M.S. Palmer, where they finish the season at next week.

If the Blue Devils can keep their winning ways going, a No. 2 seed is theirs for the taking.

“We’re talking playoffs, and if we can finish the year and play well, we’ll have a possible first-round home playoff game,” Embry said. “There’s a lot to play for. It’s not just pride. There’s always something to play for and not just pride but a playoff position.”
