James Wesley Hughes, 64, Waverly, died Oct. 22, 2015, at the Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born Sept. 29, 1951, in Batesville, to Claude Wesley and Annie Pearl McCullar Hughes. On May 10, 1973, he married Joan Sullivan in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

He served in the United State Marines from 1970 to 1976, and then from 1985 to 1987. He was a fireman in Oxford. He went to law enforcement school and worked for the Burlington Police Department for a year, before joining the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office. He was there from 1990 to 1994, and then 1997 until 2008, when he retired.

James was preceded in death by his parents.

James is survived by his wife Joan, Waverly, his two sons, James E. Hughes and his wife Tammy, Victorville, North Carolina and Doug Hughes, Lebo, his daughter, Melissa Ann Smith, Oxford, three sisters, Martha Christman and her husband Lonnie, Betty Christman, both of Batesville, and Jean Conner, Coffeeville, six grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

As to his wishes he was cremated. Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at the Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. There will also be memorial services at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at Faith Baptist Church, Oxford.
