Supervisors: ‘No’ to law restricting adult businesses

The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors said no to an ordinance that restricted adult businesses in the county on Monday because they want to develop a stronger ordinance.

A supervisor first proposed the ordinance so the planning commission could restrict how close an adult business could locate to a school or church and regulate the hours of operation.

Since the county does not have zoning, state law says a county can neither designate a particular area for adult businesses nor can it refuse a business from setting up based solely on its type of business.

Population rises, yet crime rates stay low

Despite population gains and hikes in enrollment at the University of Mississippi, crime reported in Oxford remained relatively the same in a five-year period

According to the Uniform Crime Reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, property crime in Oxford has slightly dropped from the level reported five years ago. Violent crime has remained about the same.

“In our opinion, the Oxford Police Department is continuing to work hard to provide a safe and secure environment for our citizens to live and work in,” said OPD Assistant Chief Mike Martin.

Local woman keeps actors in stitches with work on area movie productions

Oxford may have been passed over for the filming of “A Time to Kill” but one Oxford resident is bringing her presence on site every day in Canton.

Peggy Penamon, who has been a seamstress with Virginia’s Alterations since 1988, has worked on several movie sets and was thrilled to get the “big call” from costume supervisor Pamela Wise after being recommended for the gig.

“I made about 30 Klan robes and hoods,” Penamon said. “A lot of people ask me, how do you feel, making all these white robes? And I say when I make these robes, I don’t see white. I see the green because it’s just money to me.”

Plant to locate in Water Valley

Calhoun Apparel is readying to build a facility in the W.C. Gardiner Industrial Park.

The business is a maker of pants and will construct a 35,000-square-foot building.

Bobby Steele, president of the company, said the new facility will employ about 150 people the first 12 months with the possibility of more in the coming years.

Clear Creek Park progress discussed

A group of community leaders met with state representatives from the Mississippi State Park Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Sardis Reservoir management to discuss progress and promises about the Clear Creek Park site on the reservoir.

The meeting was a joint effort by the L-O-U Committee of the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber’s Clear Creek Park Committee.

Federal funds will be used for a road contract and for subsequent developmental steps for the park.
