On Veterans Day, local veteran organizations are asking Lafayette County residents to join them in thanking those Americans who gave all they could so that we can enjoy the little things that some people take for granted.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said Jerry Bratton, commander of the Disabled American Veterans in Oxford. He also serves as the Mississippi DAV Sgt. of Arms. “We’re hoping we get a good crowd.”

The annual ceremony is sponsored by Oxford’s three veteran organizations — the DAV, American Legion Post 55 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3978; however, each year they rotate who hosts the event. This year, it’s the DAV’s turn.

The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. at the National Guard Armory, next to the Oxford Conference Center off Sisk Avenue. The event will kick off with music from the Oxford High School band under the direction of Marsha Morgan.

The event also will include Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson welcoming everyone to the event. The Oxford Police Department Color Guard will present the colors.

Oxford veteran, Ward 1 Aldermen and House District Representative-elect Hughes will be the guest speaker.

Veterans’ Day falls every year on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.

The same day is celebrated in other countries as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. The day celebrates the ending of all World War I hostilities ending at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

“Veterans Day is an important time for everyone in Lafayette County to show their support of our local veterans and let them know their sacrifices were appreciated,” Bratton said.

Veterans are welcome to attend the ceremony in uniform.

— Oxford University School invites all local veterans to attend a Veterans Day breakfast and assembly. The day will begin with a light breakfast at 9:15 a.m. at the Church of Christ on North Lamar Boulevard.
