Miscues doom Devils in final loss

Aberdeen made its share of plays Friday, but Water Valley gave the Bulldogs more than their fair share of help.

The Blue Devils’ season came to an end with a 42-13 loss in the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs. Water Valley had won six of its previous seven games and carried a five-game winning streak into Aberdeen, but seven first-half turnovers — two of which resulted in immediate points for the Bulldogs — never gave the Blue Devils a chance to extend it to six.

“It was one of those games where if it could go wrong, it went wrong,” Water Valley coach Brad Embry said. “We threw two interceptions they ran back for touchdowns in the first half. One of them was 105 yards. Fumbled kickoffs. Just fumbled the ball. It’s hard to believe we had seven turnovers in the first half. There’s the game right there to be honest with you.”

Aberdeen (10-3) scored 22 straight points until Kirkland Horton scored for Water Valley (7-6) on a quarterback keeper late in the third quarter. The senior also had a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to account for both of the Blue Devils’ scores in his final game.

One interception resulted in a 65-yard pick-six as Aberdeen raced out to a 20-0 lead. Another was returned the length of the field as time expired in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 36-7 lead at the break.
