It doesn’t happen often, but Ole Miss and Mississippi State will square off as ranked foes this year.

The Rebels came in at No. 19 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday while Mississippi State jumped back in the rankings at No. 23, making Saturday’s Egg Bowl just the sixth time in the game’s history both teams will be ranked and the first time it’s ever happened in back-to-back years.

Ole Miss (8-3, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) won last year’s meeting in Oxford, 31-17. This year’s game will be played in Starkville, where the Bulldogs (8-3, 4-3) have won the last five meetings.

Ole Miss jumped six spots in the poll with its 38-17 win over LSU on Saturday, giving itself an outside shot to play in the SEC Championship Game should it beat Mississippi State and Auburn upset No. 2 Alabama. Mississippi State fell out of the rankings last week after losing to the Crimson Tide but reappeared with its 51-50 win at Arkansas on Saturday.

Ole Miss was ranked No. 22 in last week’s College Football Playoff rankings. Mississippi State wasn’t. The new playoff rankings will be released Tuesday.

Both teams could be involved in another shootout Saturday when the SEC’s best passing offenses collide.

Ole Miss’ Chad Kelly leads the league with 3,504 passing yards while Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott is right behind him with 3,159. The Rebels are averaging a league-best 40.4 points per game, and the Bulldogs rank fourth with 33.5 each time out.
