For the first time in 46 years, Ole Miss is headed to the Sugar Bowl.

The Rebels will face Oklahoma State in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 1 at 7:30 p.m. The announcement came Sunday afternoon, making official what was put in place with Saturday’s results.

Ole Miss, which stayed at No. 12 in the final College Football Playoff rankings, remained the Southeastern Conference’s second-highest ranked team following No. 2 Alabama’s 29-15 win over No. 19 Florida in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday. With the Crimson Tide a part of the playoff, the Rebels (9-3, 6-2 SEC) earned their ninth Sugar Bowl bid and first since Archie Manning quarterbacked Ole Miss past Arkansas 27-22 in 1970.

The Big 12 champion was also taken away from the Sugar Bowl with No. 4 Oklahoma making the playoff, leaving the bowl to settle for the conference’s No. 2 team, which is determined by regular-season results rather than the playoff rankings.

No. 16 Oklahoma State (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) tied with No. 11 TCU for second place in the conference after Texas knocked off Baylor on Saturday, but the Cowboys got the nod with their 49-29 win over the Horned Frogs on Nov. 7.

It’s the third bowl matchup between the teams, all coming in the last 13 years. The other two meetings came in the Cotton Bowl with Ole Miss beating the Cowboys 31-28 in 2004 and 21-7 in 2010.

The game will feature two of the nation’s top 14 scoring offenses and two of the top 10 passing offenses. Ole Miss won four of its last five regular-season games while Oklahoma State lost its last two, including a 58-23 setback to Oklahoma its last time out.
