The story centers on a sibling rivalry between grown brothers who have a modern-day showdown in their mother’s home. The play was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1983.

According to Lyn Gardner, critic for The Guardian, True West is “one of those plays whose status is so assured, to start questioning it feels a bit like asking whether King Lear is any good.”
