Art crawl returns

The Oxford Arts Crawl will return Tuesday.

“The Arts Crawl is an effort by the visual art spaces in Oxford,” said Wayne Andrews, director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. “We recognized that each of us held receptions on different days, and with regularity, overlap occurred between the receptions.

“By creating a set schedule for receptions, the groups share marketing efforts, can cross promote and even plan for themed events.”

Andrews said this month, the Powerhouse has an exhibit of quilts, North Light Gallery has mixed fiber works, and the museum has a contemporary fiber artist.

“These shows connect both the Arts Crawl and the upcoming fiber festival,” he said.

Featured locations for the Arts Crawl include the University of Mississippi Museum featuring Kate Freeman Clark, Powerhouse Community Arts Center featuring Piecemakers Quilt Exhibit, Southside Gallery, High Point Coffee featuring Claire Whitehurst and The Shelter on Van Buren.

The Arts Crawl will run January through October, every fourth Tuesday of the month from 6-8 p.m.

Free event

“It is a chance to tour the ever-changing art exhibits in Oxford in the galleries, museums and other spaces such as High Point and Shelter,” Andrews said.

“The artists are often on site, giving you a chance to learn about their works,” he said. “Many locations offer a small reception, so it is a social event that gives you a reason to visit all those places you intend to visit during the month, but just get too busy.”

Andrews said the event is free and open to everyone.

“People do ride the (Double Decker) bus,” he said. “Many people walk between locations. You can start at any location as the bus makes a continuous loop.”

He said it’s a great way to get a glimpse at Oxford art.

“Then, when you see something that catches your attention, you can go back and explore it in depth,” he said. “Our visual art spaces are constantly rotating shows, so there is always something new to see.”
