OXFORD — Hettie Christine Varner Carpenter, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. The funeral service was held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with the Rev. Fish Robinson officiating. Burial followed in Church Grove Cemetery in Oxford. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Panola County, she was a homemaker who found great joy in sewing and gardening. She was an excellent cook and shared her recipes with others who still use them today.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Carpenter, two daughters, Shirley Milam and Sylvia Graham and two sons, Kenneth and Melvin Carpenter.

Survivors include her son, Lyndon Carpenter of Starkville; a sister, Betty Edwards Miles of Oxford; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
