Cyberattacks of any variety can happen at any time even to the most protected individual, business or system.

Sunday’s attack of the Oxford School District could have happened to anyone anywhere. We are thankful the school district leaders took a precautionary measure against the crypto-ransomware attack by an unknown hacker and took down its servers.

The good news is no personal information or critical data was compromised and the school’s technology leaders and administrators started resolving the issue immediately.

The Internet is a tremendous part of our daily lives, including in the school system. Teachers, faculty and students all need to access the Internet for email, lesson plans and classroom instruction. Even accessing a simple video on the Internet for instruction is necessary these days. The attack also kept everyone from accessing any network-related activity.

Most of us know what it’s like to be sidelined at work when a system or the Internet goes down. Work grinds to a halt. Classroom instruction is the last thing that needs to stop, so we are thankful for the quick action from the school district and hope police are able to determine and prosecute the responsible individual or entity.
