Tree give-a-way day set for Thursday

Want to fill your lawn with trees but don’t want to pay the money at a nursery?

The forestry commission is having a free tree give-away to help you and your yard out.

On a first-come, first-served basis, fruit trees, hardwood and pine seedlings will be given away starting at 8 a.m. Thursday. At the Mississippi Forestry Commission Work Center at 310 Highway 30 East.

Fruit trees are Belle of Georgia peach, Bartlett pear and Santa Rosa plum. Hardwood seedlings are American plum, bald cypress, black walnut, Chinese chestnut, eastern redbud, persimmon, red maple, Sawtooth oak, white oak, white flowering dogwood, eastern red cedar and southern magnolia.

Fruit trees and southern magnolias are limited to one per variety. Hardwood seedlings are limited to three varieties in bundles of about five seedlings per bundle. Pine seedlings are limited to one bundle of about 25 seedlings.

Nail Forestry Service and Weyerhaeuser are donating the pine seedlings. The Lafayette County Soil and Water Conservation District is donating the fruit trees and hardwood seedlings.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission and the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be available for information on placement and proper planting. For information, call 662-234-8701 extension 3 or 662-234-1182.
