The University of Mississippi’s Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority is planning an event with the goal of feeding thousands.

Chapter spokeswoman Alex Thompson said everyone is welcome to volunteer or give Feb. 26-27 for the Feed the Hunger Pack a Thon at the Oxford Middle School gym.

Feed the Hunger is the chapter’s philanthropy, and the goal is to pack 170,000 meals, which costs $46,000. For $65, a child is fed for a year.

“Each meal packed feeds a child for a year,” she said. “There are Kappas going on a mission trip to Haiti over spring break and will be delivering some of these meals.”

It’s the sorority’s sixth annual Pack a Thon, and some donations stay local, some stay in the U.S. and others will go to Haiti on the mission trip.

“It’s important people support this cause because while we are helping children all over the globe, we are also giving back to people in our country as well,” Thompson said. “The thing that has always stood out to me is that one packaging of food, or $65, feeds a child for an entire year. Kappa believes the most important thing you can do is help others, and this is just one of the many steps we take towards that goal.”
