The Lafayette County Literacy Council will give every first-grader in Lafayette County a copy of The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller as part of the Children’s Book Festival at the 23rd Oxford Conference for the Book on Feb. 23-25. Students will interact with the book through activities at their local schools and hear the author speak at the Ford Center.

“The Literacy Council works very hard to connect books with children,” said Nancy Opalko, chair of the Children’s Book Festival. “The Children’s Book Festival is one of the best ways in which we accomplish that goal.”

During the festival, students will see the book come alive with parades, skits and readings at their schools. In the following week, teachers and librarians will incorporate the book into curriculum-based activities. Classes will hear the author, Laurie Keller, speak at the Gertrude C. Ford Center on March 4 to conclude the week. Keller will also hold a book signing at Square Books Jr. at 3 p.m. March 4.
