It is officially time to spring into art, and what better way to welcome in the new season than to attend the annual Spring Art Show hosted by the Oxford Artists’ Guild on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This annual sale is a great way to view local art and make some new purchases to brighten up your home. Along with this sale, there are a few other exhibitions worth paying a visit to.

This year’s sale will feature 18 artists who belong to the guild. Their works range from paintings, leather work, fiber art, silver jewelry, basketry and everything in between.

Participants in Saturday’s event include: Charles Chapin, June Pryor, Ed Tropp, Cindy Aune, Lori Blaylock, Carol Smith, Katherine Adams, Tiffeny Owens, Laila Owens, Andy Hight, Catherine Smith, Ann Crabtree, Pam Locke, Janet and Mark Barnes, Susan Rose, Pat Gillenwater and Lee Ann O’Keefe.

Not only will great art be featured, but live music also lends a festive air to the sale. Luke Fisher and the Wilburs will play from noon to 3 p.m. making this a fun event to bring visiting holiday guests and family members to enjoy the Oxford art scene.

At North Light Gallery at the Orchard Church, an exhibit featuring four Ole Miss art students will be up through the end of April. The gallery, which is located at 295 Highway 7 North, is open Monday through Thursdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Thirteen pieces all done in oil will be on display at this beautiful light filled gallery space. Artists featured in this exhibition include Brooke Alexander, Marisa Andropolis, Ansley Givhan, and Laura Magbee.

The Powerhouse will stage its Shakespeare themed show “Wherefore Art Thou” in conjunction with the First Folio events going on at the University of Mississippi campus.

It will be open from April 4 to May 2. The gallery space is open from 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located at 413 South 14th St. at the corner of University Avenue.

Also coming up will be many other events surrounding the First Folio tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library. Performances, lectures and exhibits are going on in Oxford during April and the festivities have already begun.

This traveling exhibition from the Folger Shakespeare Library, in partnership with the Cincinnati Museum Center and the American Library Association in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, has sent first folios to each state and Ford Center was the site chosen to exhibit for Mississippi.

Along with this exhibition, events will be going on at various locations on campus and in town. Visit www.fordcenter.org/shakespearefirstfolio for more information on the schedule. This wonderful opportunity for learning and entertainment has events geared for everyone from scholars to families.

Take advantage of this great cultural offering that Oxford is so lucky to experience.

Over the next few weeks I will cover local art shows at the Frame Up, Gallery 130 at Meek Hall and more. Happy Easter!
