The Oxford Middle School boys track team hosted its first meet of the season Wednesday, claiming first-place finishes in all of the events in the run-only meet that included Charleston, Clarksdale, Lafayette and Tunica-Rosa Fort.

“We often try to have a practice-type meet early in the season where teams get to compete, learn where they are supposed to go but still make for a competitive environment,” Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said.

Walt Johnson started the meet by winning the 3,200 meters. Sam Shelton won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 48 seconds, and Robert Culpepper ran the 800 meters in a winning time of 2:38.

Tykel Owens took first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.02 while Kelvin Wadley blazed an 11.4 to win the 100-yard dash. Ethan Johnson won the 300 hurdles in 47.34 while Byron Pearson and Wadley finished tied for first in the 200 meters with a time of 23.85.

The team of Jacob Rousseau, Stone Tosh, Shelton and Culpepper won the 4×800 team relay while Ladarius Giles, Sam Bianco, Pearson and Wadley edged Rosa Fort with a time of 46.65 to win the 4×100. Giles, Wesley Peques, Byron Peques and Owens finished a second and a half off the school record to win the 4×200 in 1:37.00.

“1:35.5 is the school record, so we have a goal to reach in this race,” Hardwick said. “We lost some time in two of our handoffs, so we have something to shoot for.”

Oxford finished the day with Giles, Bianco, Culpepper and Wesley Peques winning the 4×400. The Chargers will be back at Bobby Holcomb Field on Thursday to host the OMS Invitational.
