Commodores start season with multiple wins in Crossroads Relays

Inclement weather postponed the start of Lafayette’s track season until Saturday, but the Commodores had a strong first showing.

Lafayette captured multiple first-place finishes on the girls’ side to highlight its performance at the Crossroads Relays hosted by Winona. The meet consisted of 20 teams.

Orianna Shaw won the 100 meters in 12.3 seconds, the 200 meters in 26.2 and the 400 meters in 59.8. Xhiir Burgess won the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 2 inches while also claiming first in the triple jump (32-6) and third in the shot put (29.4).

Alexis Weekley took second in the high jump (4-8) while Julianna Mikell finished fourth in the 1,600 meters (6:30) and the 3,200 meters (14:20).

The Commodores’ top finishes on the boys’ side came in the team relays. Brandon Turnage, Jonah Matlock, Eric Ragsdale and Michael Fortner finished in 9:40 to place third in the 4×800. Turnage, Douglas Tanner, Tay Tay Owens and Shanaine Adams finished fifth in the 4×400 with a time of 3:46.

Lafayette will take part in invitationals at Center Hill this Saturday as well as April 9 before heading to Byhalia on April 12 for its region meet.
