Every year, the Environmental Studies minor at the University of Mississippi hosts an Earth Day lecture as a culminating event during Green Week.

The speaker will be Linda Hogan, who will deliver a talk titled “Earth Speaking” on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Overby Auditorium on the University campus.

Linda Hogan is an internationally acclaimed Chickasaw poet, novelist, memoirist and environmental activist. She has taught at the University of Colorado and at the Indigenous Education Institute. She has been a speaker at the United Nations Forum and was a plenary speaker at the Environmental Literature Conference in Turkey in 2009.

Hogan’s awards include a Lannan Literary Award, the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Spirit of the West Literary Achievement Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas. She is this year’s recipient of the PEN Henry David Thoreau Prize for Nature Writing.

Linda Hogan’s lecture is sponsored by the Mississippi Humanities Council, the University of Mississippi Lecture Series, the Minor in Environmental Studies, the Office of Sustainability, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, the John and Renee Grisham Visiting Writers Series, and the English Department.
