United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County has exceeded its campaign goal and set a record for the 46-year-old organization.

Thanks to donations from individuals and businesses, United Way’s campaign has hit $591,500, surpassing a goal of $540,000. Those dollars allow life-changing opportunities to hundreds of LOU individuals and families as well as allow people’s basic needs to be met like food and shelter, education and financial stability.

Alice Ricks, executive director of United Way Oxford & Lafayette County, said she is thrilled with the campaign results.

“Because of your generosity, UWOLC will continue to improve local lives and strengthen our community,” she said. “The hard work of so many, including our 2015 Campaign Co-chairs Susan Massey and James Harper, enabled us to surpass our goal. Special thanks to everyone who played a role in our record-breaking success. We are proud to say that 99 percent of every dollar raised stays right here in our community.”

United Way works in partnership with individuals, nonprofits, businesses, and public entities to mobilize all resources.   

Because of United Way’s work in the community:

• More third-graders are reading proficiently, ready to transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Early childhood interventions, school based initiatives, and after-school and summer programs are improving literacy and minimizing absenteeism.

• Children, adolescents, adults and seniors are healthier, both physically and mentally. Programs funded by UWOLC encourage exercise, promote nutritious eating and provide therapeutic services, all while teaching skills that allow individuals and their families to live healthier and more enriched lives.

• Individuals and families are building skills that will allow them to be financially stable and focus on a brighter future, ending the cycle of poverty.

• United Way’s record-breaking campaign will mean more people are touched and more lives are improved. Everyone who gave is investing in the successful future of our community.
