It was a rough day on the diamond for area softball and baseball teams with all five teams losing their game — or games — Saturday.

For the three softball teams, it was a day of eliminations with Oxford, Lafayette and Water Valley all seeing their seasons end with first-round series losses.

Oxford was facing elimination at Vicksburg in Game 2 of its MHSAA Class 5A first-round series after dropping the opening game on Friday but used clutch hitting to stay alive. Kyla Malone hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to defeat the Gators 5-4 and force a deciding Game 3. Madison Crosby went the distance in the second game and had to come in out of the bullpen in the first inning in Game 3.

Crosby was not able to keep the Chargers alive as they dropped the series finale 13-11 after Vicksburg scored the winning runs in the sixth inning to advance to the second round.

Lafayette also went on the road staring elimination in the face as the Commodores went to West Lauderdale to finish its Class 4A playoff series. The Commodores were swept by the Knights with an 8-2 loss in Game 2 after dropping Game 1 at home Friday night. Chloe Russell and Madisyn Cobbs pitched three innings each in Saturday’s loss. Cylie Robertson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Water Valley had the 1-0 lead in its Class 3A series with Hatley after a win on Friday night but was not able to carry that momentum with it on the road. Hatley swept both elimination games by scores of 18-8 and 8-7, ending the Blue Devils’ season.

Baseball

Lafayette and Water Valley both had the opportunity to sweep their series and move on to next weekend’s second round after winning on Friday night.

Lafayette traveled down Highway 6 to Pontotoc and was blanked 10-0 in six innings in Game 2 to force a deciding Game 3 on Monday at 7 p.m. back at Lafayette’s W.V. Brewer Field. The winner gets Houston in the next round.

The Blue Devils were also shut out, losing 2-0 on the road to Booneville. The teams will play the rubber match on Monday at Water Valley High School at 6 p.m. with Nettleton awaiting the winner.
