CALHOUN COUNTY — Capt. Max Robert Miller, Jr., 67, died Friday, April 22, 2016, in Calhoun County. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at College Hill Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Justin McGuire officiating. Visitation will be held today from 4-7 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Bakersfield, California, he graduated from North Bakersfield High School in 1967 and chose to pursue a career of service by attending the California Maritime Academy. After college, he served as a fire fighter in the Kern County Fire Department as well as a subsequent career in the United States Coast Guard. He and his wife Janis finally settled in Oxford, where Max continued his career of service by working for his beloved Ole Miss, serving students every day as well as dutifully carrying out the office of Deacon at College Hill Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janis Miller; sons, Patrick Miller of Minden, Louisiana, and Ryan of Oxford; sister, Patricia Armstrong of Vancouver, Washington; brother, Greg Miller of Hammond, Oregon; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
