OUS plans move in 2013

Oxford University School officials announced Thursday the school will be leaving its current location on South Lamar Boulevard to make way for the new hospital project.

OUS, a private school, plans to launch a capital campaign over the summer for a new building and will move in May 2013. Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi will build its new medical facility on land near the school.

OUS officials said its new land deal is not final, and the school had been studying relocating for years.

Multi-layered performance christens arts center

Improv painting and tap dance met Shakespeare and Faulkner Thursday at a dedication event to mark the opening of Oxford’s Powerhouse Community Arts Center.

The opening featured various forms of art to showcase the space available for every medium inside the 80-year-old former home of the Oxford Electric Department. The facility underwent an $830,000 first-phase renovation and a second phase is planned for the future.

School board tackles security issues

The Oxford School Board authorized Oxford Police Chief Steve Bramlett to amend a federal grant the school district has pending to increase the number of police officers the grant will provide.

Recent fighting in the schools, prompted the board to request two additional officers be added to the district’s previous request. If approved, three federally funded officers would join two officers already working in the schools with the D.A.R.E. program.

Record rainfall recorded locally

Record rainfall has inundated Lafayette County, more than doubling the amount that normally comes down in April.

The USDA Forest Hydrology Lab said that from just 7 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday, more than 6 inches of rain had fallen, bringing the total to 16.68 inches. Normal rainfall, a hydrologic technician said, is 6 inches.

Contract awarded for Highway 6 work

The Highway Commission awarded a construction contract for a 10.5-mile section of Highway 6 between Oxford and Batesville.

The contract calls for grading, drainage, culverts, bases, asphalt pavement including overlay, bridge and erosion control.

The work should be complete by June 5, 1979, and that will make all of Highway 6 under contract all the way to Interstate 55.

Boyd Construction Company of Grenada and Farish Gravel Company of Greenwood will do the work for $2,816,235.18.
