This Friday will offer fun things to do for a good cause with the annual Relay for Life.

Lafayette County’s Relay will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Oxford Intermediate School with a theme of “Wish Upon a Cure.”

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony and survivor’s dinner, which will remind people of the reason for Relay for Life and celebrate those who won their fight against cancer.

“Relay is important to bring awareness to the Lafayette community that cancer exists,” said Beverly Kagey, who is heading up entertainment and ceremonies. “There are many who have lost their battle but many more still fighting. We need to raise funds in order to help those fighting. We are wishing upon a cure and need funds to do just that.”

Kagey said entertainment starts at 6:30 p.m. and there is a full lineup of music, including Shane King, and there will be plenty of dancing. One highlight, at 7:10 p.m. is the annual Oxford Police Department versus Oxford Fire Department tug-of-war contest.

“We will have a deejay on hand to help pump up the crowd,” Kagey said. “Each relay team will have an activity at their tent for a small charge. The children will not want to miss Elsa, Ana and Olaf. We will also have many types of food there.”

There are 19 teams this year that will offer various games for a fee in order to hit their team fundraising goal. The teams already have been holding fundraisers leading up to the relay.

“We have been blessed with local restaurants helping out with Spirit Nights, giving a percentage of their profits to Relay,” Kagey said. “We’ve had one team set up a photo session with Mickey and Minnie. Also a team had Pancakes and Play Dates, which allowed families to come enjoy a Saturday morning breakfast and play time together.”

Event financial chair Jessica Harwell said the combined goal this year is to hit $57,000, which would go directly to the American Cancer Society for research and programs to support those in the Lafayette County community battling cancer.

“We are hoping that the community will show strong support and turn out by the hundreds,” Harwell said. “It’s sure to be an fun night for your entire family.”
