A little-known aspect of the American Civil War that has not been studied much is that women actually fought in the War Between the States for both the Union and Confederate armies.

On Saturday, May 21, Shelby Harriel will present “Forbidden, Hidden and Forgotten: Women Soldiers of the Civil War” from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Burns-Belfry Museum.

Harriel, a mathematics instructor at Pearl River Community College, will share excerpts from a variety of sources to document the decisions made by women who impersonated men and fought on both sides of the Civil War. The 2014 PRCC Outstanding Humanities Teacher has traveled throughout the country speaking at various Civil War sites, museums and professional groups.

Following her presentation, Cedar Oaks Guild will be offering lunch at Cedar Oaks for $15 per person. Cedar Oak Guild Docents in period dress will provide detailed tours of the historic home, presenting Oxford’s Civil War experiences and the unique story of the home.
