Chargers rack up individual titles

After claiming its ninth consecutive team title on Monday, the Oxford High tennis team was not finished collecting medals.

The Chargers earned four of the five individual Class 5A state championships at Parham Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson on Wednesday.

Oxford was guaranteed titles in the doubles tournaments as the Chargers were facing each other in the finals.

Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis defeated teammates Grace Anne Jones and Amanda Lowery 6-2, 6-2 to earn the girls doubles title. Will Swindoll and Bo Nash beat seventh-grader Gordon Whitwell and Ryan Mounce in straight sets for the boys doubles championship. It was Swindoll’s sixth straight doubles title dating back to his seventh-grade season.

The team of Abbie Vaughn and Max Mauney beat Trey Wegner and Rianne Taylor of Stone County in straight sets to claim the mixed doubles title.

There was a first for Oxford coach Louis Nash on Wednesday as Jones won the girls singles championship over Center Hill’s Mikalia Coleman in straight sets. It is the first time a Charger has clinched the girls’ title during Nash’s storied coaching career.

Oxford was unable to complete the clean sweep as Gus Morgan fell in the boys’ singles championship. Ridgeland’s Darius Kent defeated Morgan 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.
