Remember fallen law enforcement this week

Today marks the start of National Police Week.

Through Saturday various observances will be held throughout the country. Both Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker offered tributes in advance of the 35th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at the U.S. Capitol.

We are beyond thankful that we have not lost any law enforcement officers here in Lafayette County this year, but that has not always been the case here or across the state.

In 2015, Mississippi did lose officers in the line of duty, including Mississippi Gaming Commission Director of Investigations John B. Gorman, Warren County Deputy Sheriff Johnny Gatson, Hattiesburg Police Officers Liquori Tate and Benjamin Deen, and Mississippi Department of Corrections Sgt. Iris Smith.

An observance will be held this week to remember those in Lafayette County who lost their lives while on duty. It will be at 11 a.m. Thursday on the courthouse lawn. We encourage residents to come show respect, patriotism and care for those who help us sleep safely at night and create a safe environment whether we’re 8, 18 or 80 and to remember those who made an ultimate sacrifice.
