Oxonians can plan to make a splash this weekend at the City Pool.

With the temperature in the high 80s expected for Saturday, there’s no better way to cool off than by a dunk in a pool.

The City Pool will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday. For 38 years, the pool has helped keep residents cool and provided swimming lessons to thousands of area children.

“It’s ready,” said Oxford Park Commission Assistant Director Bubba Robinson. “We’re getting the lifeguards trained this week and we’ll be all set come Saturday.”

Thanks to a private donation and a golf fundraiser earlier this year, free swimming lessons will be offered again this summer. There will be four weekly sessions. Registration for each session takes place a week prior to the session.

Pool hours through Aug. 4 will be 1 to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The pool will close Monday through Friday starting Aug. 5 and be open only on the weekends until Labor Day. There will be family nights throughout the summer.

The price to enter the pool is $3 for all children and adults. Senior citizens over 55 are free. Individual and family memberships are available.

Changing rooms, showers and restrooms are available.

Another popular feature is the Wibit — a blow-up obstacle course that sits on top of the water.

“It’s very popular,” Robinson said. “Every couple of years we try to get a new piece to add to it.”

One rule that Robinson and his staff have been cracking down on in the last couple of years is the requirement that everyone who goes into the pool wears a bathing suit.

“No shorts and tank tops,” he said. “You can wear a T-shirt over your bathing suit, however.”
