Residents and businesses in the Taylor community got some good news this week when AT&T officials announced Friday the area is one of several locations that will be able to access high-speed internet, something rural areas of Lafayette County have been desperately asking for in the last several years.

Mayo Flynt, the president of AT&T in Mississippi, said fiber technology will be available in 19 counties in the state that previously did not have internet service or were under-served.

AT&T says they have invested nearly $900 million into its wireless and wired networks in Mississippi since 2013, adding more than 10,000 customers in the process since 2012. That’s great news for folks in rural areas who have been dealing with slow and sometimes non-existent and inconsistent internet access, but certainly not enough.

During Friday’s big announcement in Taylor, Flynt was asked about what areas, if any, of the county could expect expansion of the fiber technology from AT&T. He indicated there will be “some other things to talk about in the near future,” which we hope means help is on the way for those folks in the rural areas of the county who are still desiring better internet service in the 21st century.
