OXFORD – Sylvester Andrew Moorhead, 96, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Oxford with the Rev. Erik Hankins and the Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-6 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home and Tuesday from 2 p.m. until service time at the church. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Denver, Colorado, he was a faculty member at the University of Mississippi from 1949 until his retirement in 1985. He served as Dean, School of Education for 25 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 13th Weather Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force in North Africa and Italy. He was a member of First Baptist Church, serving in various capacities, including deacon. He enjoyed woodworking, following Ole Miss sports and the Chicago Cubs.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine “Kay” Schlessman Moorhead, and sister Annabelle Snyder.

He is survived by brothers Paul Moorhead of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ray Moorhead of Thornton, Colorado; sons Rod Moorhead of Oxford, Kent Moorhead of Stockholm, Sweden; daughters Sylvia Tropp of Oxford and Pamela Peterson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 14 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
