Oxford students are College-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners for 2016

Joshua C. Caraway of Oxford High School received a National Merit University of Mississippi Scholarship and plans to go into mechanical engineering.

Maximilian L. Keene, who is homeschooled, received a National Merit University of Kentucky Scholarship with plans to go into civil engineering.

Finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of Scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2016 competition to approximately 4,000.

Tulane University

Two Oxford residents were among 3,000 graduates from Tulane UniversityMay 14 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Charlotte Brewer and Anne Wigington both graduated from the School of Science and Engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree.

The ceremony’s keynote speaker was Hoda Kotb, co-host of NBC’s “Today” show who also received a Tulane President’s Medal. Honorary degrees were given to renowned artist Lynda Benglis and Christopher Paola, a world leader in the study of earth surface processes, particularly in river and delta regions.

Founded in 1834 in New Orleans, Tulane has 10 schools and colleges offering degrees in architecture, business, law, liberal arts, medicine, public health and tropical medicine, the sciences and engineering, and social work.

Hamann named to dean’s list at Samford

Peyton L. Hamann of Oxford was named to the fall 2015 dean’s list at Samford University.

Samford releases dean’s lists after the close of the fall and spring semesters each academic year.

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must have earned a minimum 3.5 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 while attempting at least 12 credit hours of coursework. Dean’s list is the highest academic recognition given by the school at the end of each semester.
