OXFORD — William R. Shaw, 75, died Monday, June 13, 2016, at his home in Oxford. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 2 p.m. at College Hill Presbyterian Church in Oxford with the Rev. Alan Cochet officiating. Burial will follow in College Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in the community of College Hill in Oxford to the late Parham Rufus and Floyce Crook Shaw, Shaw earned a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from Mississippi State University. After graduation, he served as county forester in Webster, Calhoun and Lafayette counties. He then worked for 23 years as a procurement forester for a company in Oxford that, through the years, changed its ownership and changed its name from U.S. Plywood to Champion International to Georgia Pacific. After retirement from Georgia Pacific he worked for several years in a partnership buying and selling timber and land.

He began woodturning and refined his skills over many years. He started his company, Backwood Bowls, and began exhibiting at art festivals around the South. He was a member of the Mid-South Woodturner’s Guild. He served on the board of directors for Northeast Power Company for more than 40 years and was an elder at College Hill Presbyterian Church.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Shannon Tucker Shaw.

He is survived by his daughters, Leigh Shaw Fox of Oxford, Lynn Shaw Fleming of Germantown, Tennessee, Lara Shaw Archer of Oxford, and Erin Reese Shaw of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a sister, Jane Shaw Johnson of Canadian, Texas; a brother, Robert Sydney Shaw of Oxford; and four grandchildren.
