OXFORD — Loretta Lou Meyer, 81, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 25 at home in Oxford with family at her bedside.  The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, where she was an active member, with Reverend Bill Barksdale officiating.  Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. prior to the funeral at St. Andrews.  Burial will be at Concordia Cemetery in Concordia, MO. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

She was born as Loretta Bush to Charlie and Lola Bush on February 3, 1935 near Hunnewell, MO.  She grew up on a traditional working farm where she grew to love books, animals especially horses, and being outdoors.  After being valedictorian in high school and obtaining her teaching certificate at Northeast Missouri College (now Truman State University), she taught all grades at a one-room school in rural Missouri.  She was an accomplished musician, serving as church pianist and at weddings and local events. She met her future husband, Don Meyer at a Methodist church camp; they fell in love, and were married on December 26, 1954.  The next year, they moved to Lafayette, IN where she continued her education while Don pursued his PhD at Purdue University. She became a full-time homemaker after son Dan was born.  There, they were further blessed with two more sons, Jim and David.  The family moved to Oxford, MS in 1973, where she and Don have resided since.

Loretta was Don’s beloved wife for 61 years, a devoted mother to her three sons and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren.  She enjoyed traveling with Don and the rest of the family to many wonderful locations throughout the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii.  She loved music, especially playing and singing old hymns and folk songs. She was an avid reader, with her ever-growing library filling virtually every room of their home in Oxford.  She had a passion for cooking and baking, and her family always looked forward to her delicious meals. In her later years, she delighted in the simple things of life with Don, including flowers, birds, long walks, visits from family and friends, their devotional time, and the many pictures of family and friends around which she surrounded herself.
