A Lafayette County man has been indicted for negligent homicide for his role in what local law enforcement ruled an accidental shooting earlier this year.

On Jan. 5, officers responded to a home on Old Taylor Road after a report of a shooting. There they discovered Hunter Escue, 18, unresponsive with obvious injuries from a gunshot wound. He was immediately taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi where he was pronounced dead by Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy.

Officers interviewed Austin McLarty, 20, of Lafayette County who said he was the one who called 911. Investigators said the men were handling firearms, when a shot was reportedly fired from Austin’s pistol, striking and killing Hunter.

In January, Oxford Police Chief Joey East said the shooting appeared to be accidental. The two men were first cousins and roommates.

No charges were filed against McLarty by OPD; however the case was sent to the grand jury in June, which formally indicted McLarty of negligent homicide. He was arrested recently and released on a $10,000 bond, according to East.

McLarty is the son of Lafayette County Supervisor Chad McLarty.

Former Anchor employee indicted

A woman whose name once appeared as the contact person for the Anchor Water Association has been indicted for embezzlement.

Jessica Riggs Tidwell, 54, of Water Valley was arrested in March for allegedly stealing about $100,000 from the nonprofit water association.

According to reports, the water association’s board of directors reported to the sheriff’s department that there was a discrepancy in their accounting and that an accountant discovered more than $100,000 was missing.”

Tidwell is accused of taking money over the past five to 10 years.

In April after Tidwell’s arrest board member Bill McGregor said Tidwell was replaced and “all is well.”

Man faces two  extortion charges

A local man was indicted on two charges of extortion for an incident that occurred on March 8.

Investigators say Mark A. Duncan, 28, was using personal and private information not meant for public knowledge against his former girlfriend.

The alleged victim reported that Duncan had been blackmailing her and demanding $7,000 from her to not make the information public. She allegedly paid Duncan some money and when she refused to continue to do so, Duncan allegedly kidnapped her at gunpoint and made her drive him around to various places.

She was eventually let go and she reported the incident to the sheriff’s department. Duncan was arrested in Saltillo by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force after a warrant was issued.
