FFA scholarship given to local student

The National FFA Organization awarded a $1,000 Built Ford Tough scholarship to Edith Kent of the Lafayette FFA Chapter. The scholarship is sponsored by Belk Ford Inc. as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Kent plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

This scholarship is one of 1,820 awarded through the National FFA Organization’s scholarship program this year. Currently 116 sponsors contribute more than $2.6 million to support scholarships for students.

The 2016 scholarship recipients were selected from 8,383 applicants from across the country. Selections were based on the applicant’s leadership, academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural or work experience in agricultural education and future goals.

attends MIT session

The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announces 86 top achieving U.S. scholars and international scholars are attending the 33rd annual Research Science Institute (RSI), jointly sponsored with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through Aug. 5.

Sichen Shawn Chao of  Oxford High School is attending RSI, a six-week intensive program that provides students with the opportunity to conduct original, cutting edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities.

The RSI Selection Committee, comprised of professional educators and RSI alumni, convened at the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in March 2016 to select high school students to attend the nationally recognized program.

Students selected for RSI are exemplary as based on the following criteria: high school records, personal essays, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, research experience, potential for leadership, and honors and awards in math and science.

RSI is offered cost-free by CEE to competitively selected top achieving students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). RSI scholars participate in college-level research under the mentorship of leading scientists, engineers, and researchers in the Boston area.

Students graduate from Northeast CC

Northeast Mississippi Community College awarded about 550 degrees this May in ceremonies. Included in the gradating students were Moesha Janae Phillips of Oxford, Qyalycia Antrece Benson of Taylor and Christopher Coleman Camp and Je’Miller Dural Handy, both of Water Valley.

Oxford student gets honor group status

Sigma Alpha Lambda recently recognized Oxford native Katherine Lynne Knight as a member of its national leadership and honors organization.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is promotes and rewards academic achievement and provides members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
