A public hearing will be held Tuesday on a change to the city’s Vehicle for Hire ordinance that would restrict roof lights for taxis.

The change is the first major addition to the ordinance that was approved by the Oxford Board of Aldermen in August 2014. The Vehicle for Hire ordinance manages the city’s taxicab serves and lists requirements for cab drivers and their vehicles. The ordinance does not cover online transportation services like Uber since those companies are now managed by the state.

According to the ordinance amendment, any vehicle for hire may have only one roof light mounted to its roof. The light may be turned on and off to indicate whether the vehicle is in service; however, it may not display a changeable message, flash or scroll.

During the first reading of the ordinance on July 19, Alderman Janice Antonow asked to make sure the ordinance restricted the color of the lights to either yellow or white. The lights can be solid white with yellow lettering or solid yellow with white lettering.

The lights cannot be more than 6 inches tall, 20 inches wide and six inches deep.

No other colors are allowed and no other signs are permitted on the roof, hood or trunk.

The public hearing will be held during the aldermen’s regular meeting Tuesday that begins at 5 p.m. At City Hall. The board will then elect to take a vote after the hearing or after the third reading in two weeks. However, Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Allgood, who oversees the vehicles for hire for the city, asked the aldermen to consider voting Tuesday. If approved the ordinance change would go into effect in 30 days, which would be before the first Ole Miss Rebels home football game.
