Activity center is needed

Oxford is long overdue for a new activity center.

The current facility, at the corner of Price Street and Molly Barr Road, has served the city well for decades.

A metal building that includes two indoor basketball courts, a gymnastics room and several other multipurpose rooms, the activity center has been used by tens of thousands of residents over the years.

But Oxford has grown and facilities like the activity center have grown older and out of date.

That’s why the Oxford Park Commission and director Seth Gaines are on the right track in looking to build a new activity center. The Oxford Board of Alderman has targeted $7 million as a construction cost and the OPC has been advancing the ball.

They have heard from residents that desired amenities include a walking track, fitness and cardio area, and an indoor swimming pool.

And that’s right on track. We look forward to seeing the plans develop, and applaud city leaders for the vision.
