A Corinth man will spend five years in prison for trying to extort money from a former girlfriend through blackmail.

Mark A. Duncan, 28, was sentenced during the July court term at the Lafayette County Circuit Court to 10 years in prison, but Judge John Kelly Luther suspended five years, leaving Duncan to serve five years. If he violates his probation he could be returned to finish out his sentence.

According to court records, Duncan was using personal and private information and photos not meant for public knowledge against his former girlfriend, by blackmailing her and demanding $7,000 from her to not make the information public. The victim paid Duncan some money and when she refused to continue to do so, on March 8, Duncan allegedly kidnapped her at gunpoint and made her drive him around to various places. She was eventually let go and reported the incident to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department.

A warrant was issued for Duncan’s arrest. He was arrested a week later in Saltillo by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

He was charged with kidnapping and two counts of extortion. As part of a plea bargain, the kidnapping charge was dropped.
