There are fewer things more fun than eating free funnel cakes while trying to dunk a police officer and that’s just part of all that’s planned for Saturday’s Oxford Police Department’s Fun Day event.

The event started three years ago when OPD held an Open House to give the community a chance to see renovations made to the department, meet the new administration and Chief Joey East.

“It was such a success we decided to do it every year, but of course, we couldn’t call it an open house each year, so we just call it Fun Day now,” said Capt. Alan Ivy, one of the event chairs.

The event has grown each year in both participation and activities offered by OPD. This year’s event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the OPD on Molly Barr Road. There will be free hot dogs, snow cones, drinks and new this year, free funnel cakes.

“Last year, we gave out 300 hot dogs pretty quickly,” Ivy said. “I’d estimate we had about 500 people and expect the same, if not more, on Saturday.”

Fun Day is centered around children, with plenty of activities to keep little ones busy, with face painting, two bounce houses, a hay ride and a chance to dunk a police officer into a dunk tank. There will be K9 demonstrations and a SWAT obstacle course. The Mounted Patrol horses will be there for viewing and photo ops.

Wings hospital transport will fly in a helicopter that will be on display along with other emergency vehicles.

“It’s all about community outreach,” Ivy said. “Fun Day gives people a chance to interact with police officers in a positive way.”
