Support the hometown teams

With the Ole Miss Rebels at the beginning of what stands to be another outstanding season for the football program, it’s easy to think the world — or at least Oxford — revolves around Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Don’t forget we’ve got two other football teams in this town that are a pretty big deal to students and staff at Oxford and Lafayette high schools. As both teams square off in tonight’s annual rivalry game, the Crosstown Classic, we hope Oxonians and Lafayette County residents make their way out to Bobby Holcomb field, regardless of your allegiance, to take part in one of the best traditions the South has to offer: high school football.

No matter who wins or loses, there’s something about supporting the hometown team — or in this case both teams — that binds a community like nothing else. Even if you’re a student or Oxford transplant with no ties to either school, the game will offer a rare glimpse into the heart of Oxford that goes beyond being a college town or a region dominated by interest in SEC football.

These teams are rooted here, with many players born and raised right here in Lafayette County, and a perfect way to kick off a weekend of football and fellowship in Oxford.
